PET stands for positron emission tomography. It is acquired by injecting a small dose of positron emitting radiopharmaceuticals and scanning that is similar to CT acquisition. The acquired image can provide the physiologic changes in our body before anatomical changes occur. It is widely used to diagnose a various disease and its stage. There are some differences in the procedures depending on the preparations and precautions.

Early detection of cancer is possible with PET compared to other imaging modalities. Conventional imaging modalities did not provide early detection of a tumor size of more than 1 cm. However, with the use of PET tumor size of 5mm can be precisely located.
